The NEW DVSA 'Show Me, Tell Me' Questions From December 2017

As you may be aware, the driving test is changing on the 4th of December 2017. Below is the NEW list of “Show Me, Tell Me” questions you could be asked from this date, and how you will be asked them.

The examiner will ask you one:

‘Tell Me’ Question (where you explain how you would carry out a safety task) at the start of your test, before you start driving

‘Show Me’ Question (where you show how you would carry out a safety task) while you’re driving

‘Show Me’ Questions

1. When it’s safe to do so, can you show me how you wash and clean the rear windscreen?

2. When it’s safe to do so, can you show me how you wash and clean the front windscreen?

3. When it’s safe to do so, can you show me how you’d switch on your dipped headlights?

4. When it’s safe to do so, can you show me how you’d set the rear demister?

5. When it’s safe to do so, can you show me how you’d operate the horn?

6. When it’s safe to do so, can you show me how you’d demist the front windscreen?

7. When it’s safe to do so, can you show me how you’d open and close the side window?

‘Tell Me’ Questions

1. Tell me how you’d check that the brakes are working before starting a journey.

Brakes should not feel spongy or slack. Brakes should be tested as you set off. Vehicle should not pull to one side.

2. Tell me where you’d find the information for the recommended tyre pressures for this car and how tyre pressures should be checked.

Manufacturer’s guide, use a reliable pressure gauge, check and adjust pressures when tyres are cold, don’t forget spare tyre, remember to refit valve caps.

3. Tell me how you make sure your head restraint is correctly adjusted so it provides the best protection in the event of a crash.

The head restraint should be adjusted so the rigid part of the head restraint is at least as high as the eye or top of the ears, and as close to the back of the head as is comfortable. Note: Some restraints might not be adjustable.

4. Tell me how you’d check the tyres to ensure that they have sufficient tread depth and that their general condition is safe to use on the road.

No cuts and bulges, 1.6mm of tread depth across the central three-quarters of the breadth of the tyre, and around the entire outer circumference of the tyre.

5. Tell me how you’d check that the headlights and tail lights are working. You don’t need to exit the vehicle.

Explain you’d operate the switch (turn on ignition if necessary), then walk round vehicle (as this is a ‘tell me’ question, you don’t need to physically check the lights).

6. Tell me how you’d know if there was a problem with your anti-lock braking system.

Warning light should illuminate if there is a fault with the anti-lock braking system.

7. Tell me how you’d check the direction indicators are working. You don’t need to exit the vehicle.

Explain you’d operate the switch (turn on ignition if necessary), and then walk round vehicle (as this is a ‘tell me’ question, you don’t need to physically check the lights).

8. Tell me how you’d check the brake lights are working on this car.

Explain you’d operate the brake pedal, make use of reflections in windows or doors, or ask someone to help.

9. Tell me how you’d check the power-assisted steering is working before starting a journey.

If the steering becomes heavy, the system may not be working properly. Before starting a journey, 2 simple checks can be made.

Gentle pressure on the steering wheel, maintained while the engine is started, should result in a slight but noticeable movement as the system begins to operate. Alternatively turning the steering wheel just after moving off will give an immediate indication that the power assistance is functioning.

10. Tell me how you’d switch on the rear fog light(s) and explain when you’d use it/them. You don’t need to exit the vehicle.

Operate switch (turn on dipped headlights and ignition if necessary). Check warning light is on. Explain use.

11. Tell me how you switch your headlight from dipped to main beam and explain how you’d know the main beam is on.

Operate switch (with ignition or engine on if necessary), check with main beam warning light.

12. Open the bonnet and tell me how you’d check that the engine has sufficient oil.

Identify dipstick/oil level indicator, describe check of oil level against the minimum and maximum markers.

13. Open the bonnet and tell me how you’d check that the engine has sufficient engine coolant.

Identify high and low level markings on header tank where fitted or radiator filler cap, and describe how to top up to correct level.

14. Open the bonnet and tell me how you’d check that you have a safe level of hydraulic brake fluid.

Identify reservoir, check level against high and low markings.

The Driving Test Is Changing

The Driver & Vehicle Standards Agency have announced that that the "New Driving Test" will come into force on the 4th of December 2017.

There are 4 main changes to the driving test:

1. An increase to the 'Independent Driving' part of the test from 10 minutes to 20 minutes.

2. Asking the test candidate to follow directions given by Sat Nav as an alternative to following road signs.

3. Replacing current manoeuvres such as 'reverse around a corner' with more realistic scenarios, such as driving into a parking bay and reversing back out.

4. Asking 1 or 2 vehicle safety questions while the candidate is driving.

Feedback on the changes

The Driver & Vehicle Standards Agency received over 3,900 responses to the public consultation on the changes to the test.

88% agreed with increasing the length of the independent driving part of the test

79% agreed with the plans to change the reversing manoeuvres that are tested

78% agreed with the test candidate being asked a 'Show Me' questions while they are driving

71% agreed with asking the test candidate to follow directions from a Sat Nav

Representatives of the Driver Training Industry are also supportive of the changes.

First Time Driving Test Passes To Be Given A Cash Refund

The Department of Transport have announced that first time Driving Test passes may be given a rebate of the test fee as a new government plan intends to raise the low first-time pass rate which stands at just 21%.

Transport secretary Patrick McLoughlin said: “This change will give those who pass first time some money back and provide an incentive for learners to be more prepared before they take their first test.”

Learners drivers who fail their first attempt Driving Test will not get a rebate on the £62 charge under the proposed plans, which have been put out to public consultation by the Department of Transport.

“There is anecdotal evidence that some learner drivers are booking a Practical Test date well in advance, at the start of their lessons, and then taking the test at that time whether or not they are ready,” the consultation states.

Steve Gooding, director of the RAC Foundation, said the organisation backed the proposals.
“We support measures that will encourage learner drivers to get the experience they need to pass their test first time with flying colours, rather than barely scraping through or failing and having to repeat the process a few months down the road at yet more expense,” he said.

The consultation closes on 8 January and the department will respond later next year.

Once again, Driving Examiners and Vehicle Examiners are planning to take strike action at various times during the beginning of December 2015.

Some Driving Examiners who are members of the Public and Commercial Service (PCS) union are planning to take strike action.

PCS has planned action at various times from Tuesday 1 December until Friday 4 December 2015.

Tues 1 Dec - North East, North West and Scotland
Wed 2 Dec - West Midlands, East Midlands, Yorkshire and Humber and Wales
Thurs 3 Dec - London, South East, East of England and South West
Fri 4 Dec - All of Great Britain

Advice To Driving Test Candidates:
Not all of the Examiners are union members and the DVSA expects most Driving Test Centres to operate as normal. You should still turn up for your test as planned.

Changing Your Driving Test Date:
You can change your test to another date if you want to.
Please note: You must give at least 3 clear working days notice to change your test date or you will lose your test fee.

What If Your Driving Test Is Cancelled:
The DVSA will book you a new test appointment automatically if there's no Examiner available for your test.

You will be rebooked for the earliest available date and the DVSA will send you the details of the new appointment.

Claiming Out-Of-Pocket Expenses:
You can claim out-of-pocket expenses if your test is cancelled, but you must have turned up for your test to be able to do this. If you don't turn up, you'll have to rebook your own test and won't be able to claim expenses.

Good News For Learner Drivers.

At long last there is a bit of good news for all of you learner drivers. The cost of car and motorcycle theory tests will fall by £6 in October to £25, with a further cut of £2 a year later.

The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) formally known as The Driving Standards Agency (DSA) said that they have negotiated new contracts with the test providers, and and as a result they would pass on the savings to drivers.

Some tests for lorry and bus drivers, and driving instructors will also be reduced in cost. This will be announced at a later date.

The practical car driving test will remain the same price at £62 on a weekday, and £75 in the evening after 16:30 and during weekends.
Motorcycle practical tests cost £75 for the on-road test, and £88.50 during evenings, weekends and bank holidays. The off-road element costs £15.50.

The government said that there would not be any change to the content of the cheaper theory test.
"This has been achieved without compromising on the vital role the theory test plays in making sure that new drivers know The Highway Code and the rules of the road," said Transport Minister Stephen Hammond.
"I am delighted that theory tests will now offer better value for money while continuing to meet these rigorous standards."

The theory test is only one of number of costs faced by learner drivers. The saving is the equivalent of about a quarter of a typical lesson.

10 Facts About The Driving Test You Probably Didn't Know.

Did you know the Driving Test has been going for more than 75 years?

1. Mr Beene was the first person to pass the driving test in 1935. He paid the grand total of 7/ 6p (37.5p) to take the test.
2. There were no driving test centres in 1935 so you had to arrange to meet the examiner somewhere like a post office, train station or town hall.
3. The driving test was suspended for the duration of World War 2 and didn’t resume until 1 November 1946.
4. In 1975, candidates no longer had to demonstrate hand signals.
5. The theory test was introduced in 1996, replacing questions about the Highway Code during the practical test.
6. Driving was much more hazardous 75 years ago, 7,343 people were killed on Great Britain’s roads when only 2.4 million vehicles were in use - in 2008, 2,538 people were killed with 26.5 million vehicles on the road.
7. Candidates could book their theory test online for the first time in December 2001.
8. The pass rate in 1935 was 63% compared to 46% in 2009.
9. 1969 saw the first driving test set for an automatic vehicle.
10. Since 1935 more than 46 million tests have been taken.

At Last! 'Unlimited Driving Tests For £31' Advert Is Banned.

A website's advert has been banned by the ASA for advertising unlimited driving theory tests for £31, when it charges almost double the price where learner drivers are being misled by online adverts.

An internet advert claiming to offer unlimited driving theory retests for £31 has been banned by the Advertising Standards Authority for its misleading information, as the actual cost was £59.50.

A Google sponsored search result for the website www.book-your-theory-test.co.uk stated: "£31 Book Your Driving Theory Test Unlimited Retests Until You Pass!".

However, the Driving Standards Agency challenged the advert for its misleading information as the advertiser charged £59.50 for "unlimited retests", as well as a compulsory booking fee of £8.50.

The complaint was upheld by the ASA after it agreed that the advert was misleading for its claims that its theory test cost £31, when in fact it charged a minimum of £39.50 because of the compulsory booking fee - and this should have been included in the headline price, the authority said.

Furthermore, the "unlimited retests" claim was made next to the price of £31 under the Google sponsored search advert, yet a consumer has to pay £59.50 to receive unlimited retests, and this was only made clear on the website itself.

The ASA ruled that the advert must not appear again in its current form.

Another driving theory test website faced a similar ban in September when the ASA received complaints about its Google advert which offered a driving theory test for £49.50, when the official test offered on the Goverment's website is much cheaper £31. The website was banned for giving the impression it was an official theory test provider.

Learner Drivers Warned About Extra Charges.

The Driving Standards Agency (DSA) is advising customers to avoid copycat websites and save money by coming to the agency directly.
Copycat websites offer to book theory and practical driving tests, and can appear to be the official agency, but charge a premium for their services.

Some websites also charge for ‘pass protection’ with the promise of a free "re-test" that very few customers would ever qualify to use.

Some companies charge up to £30 for just booking a test, on top of the driving test fee itself.

Misleading Consumers

In response to complaints from DSA, the Advertising Standards Authority has ordered a number of websites to remove wording that could mislead consumers into thinking they were using the official booking service.

Last month (July 2013), the website book-theory-test-online.co.uk was fined £85,000 by premium rate phone regulator Phone Pay Plus for ‘very serious’ breaches of its code.

Using Your Own Car On A Practical Driving Test?

Did you know you can use your own car for the driving test if it meets certain rules. However, your test will be cancelled and you could lose your fee if your car doesn’t meet the required standards.

Your vehicle must:

• be properly insured and have a valid tax disc
• be roadworthy and have a current MOT if it needs one
• have a seat belt for the examiner
• have an interior rear-view mirror for the examiner (these are available from most motor stores)
• have a proper passenger head restraint (not a slip-on type)
• be a smoke-free environment
• have 4 wheels
• be able to reach at least 62mph
• have a speedometer measuring speed in mph
• have no warning lights showing - for example, the airbag warning light
• have L-plates (‘L’ or ‘D’ plates in Wales) on the front and rear
• have a maximum authorised mass (MAM) of no more than 3,500 Kgs

If you are thinking of taking your car for your Practical Driving Test its worth checking that there have been no manufacture recalls on your vehicle.

If there has been a recall your vehicle will need to be checked and fixed before you can use it for the driving test if it’s on the list.

You’ll need to take proof to your test that the vehicle has been fixed properly. The proof you bring has to be one of the following:

• the actual recall letter or safety notice that has been stamped by the manufacturer or dealer
• written proof from the manufacturer or a dealer (on official or headed paper)

Your test will be cancelled and you could lose your fee if you don’t bring the right proof.

Young drivers should have restricted use of roads to reduce accidents and bring down insurance premiums. Age reduced to 16 and a half and a year on L-plates. 

New drivers should spend at least a year learning to drive before they are allowed to take their test, insurers proposed today. Young drivers should not be able to use their cars at night, have a lower drink-drive limit and should have restrictions on the number of passengers they carry, the Association of British Insurers (ABI) said.

The minimum 12-month learning period would enable young drivers to gain more supervised practice, and reduce the number of accidents involving young people. It was also proposed that the age at which young people can start learning to drive should be lowered to 16 and a half, rather than the current 17.

The Association of British Insurers also called for graduated driver licensing. This would include restrictions on the number of young passengers that can be carried by drivers in the first six months after passing their driving test.

It would include, during the first six months, restrictions (with some exemptions) on young drivers driving between 11:00pm at night and 4:00am. This proposal is already in place in countries such as Canada, which has a lower level of accidents involving young people.

During the graduated phase, there would be a lower blood alcohol driving limit. This would, in effect, be a zero limit.

The Association of British Insurers said that in the UK only one in eight driving licence holders was aged 25 or under, yet a third of those killed on the roads was aged under 25 years old.

It added that an 18 year old driver was more than three times as likely to be involved in a crash as a 48 year old driver.

In addition, 27% of motor personal injury insurance claims over £500,000 result from a crash involving a driver aged 17-24 years old.

Association of British Insurers director general Otto Thoresen said today: "Radical action is needed to reduce the tragic waste of young lives on our roads, especially among the 17-24 age group.”

"A car is potentially a lethal weapon, and we must do more to help young drivers better deal with the dangers of driving. Improving the safety of young drivers will also mean that they will face lower motor insurance costs.

"We have all side-stepped this issue for too long. Northern Ireland is introducing reforms, and politicians in Westminster should follow their lead in introducing meaningful reform to help today's young drivers become tomorrow's safer motorists."

The proposals have been met with positive reaction.

Nigel Bartram, senior motor underwriter at Aviva, said: "We believe there should be a minimum 12-month learning period as well as a lower provisional licence age of 16 and a half, both of which would allow young drivers to gain more driving experience before taking their test. We would also like to see a ban on so-called ‘crash learning courses’ which leave drivers ill-equipped to cope with the rigours of driving on today’s roads."

Andy Goldby, at Direct Line, said: “Direct Line fully supports any measures that increase the learning of young drivers and gives them more time to gain real experience on the road. However, we believe these need to be balanced, ensuring any new restrictions are both practical and easy to enforce. The implementation of a Graduated Licensing Scheme would make a real difference to the driving behaviour and habits of young people and more importantly, reduce catastrophic accidents and save lives.”
