The Driving Test Is Changing
The Driver &
Vehicle Standards Agency have announced that that the "New Driving
Test" will come into force on the 4th of December 2017.
There are 4 main
changes to the driving test:
1. An increase to
the 'Independent Driving' part of the test from 10 minutes to 20 minutes.
2. Asking the test
candidate to follow directions given by Sat Nav as an alternative to
following road signs.
3. Replacing
current manoeuvres such as 'reverse around a corner' with more
realistic scenarios, such as driving into a parking bay and reversing back
out.
4. Asking 1 or 2
vehicle safety questions while the candidate is driving.
Feedback on the
changes
The Driver &
Vehicle Standards Agency received over 3,900 responses to
the public consultation on the changes to the test.
88% agreed with increasing the
length of the independent driving part of the test
79% agreed with
the plans to change the reversing manoeuvres that are tested
78% agreed with
the test candidate being asked a 'Show Me' questions while they are driving
71% agreed with
asking the test candidate to follow directions from a Sat Nav
Representatives
of the Driver Training Industry are also supportive of the changes.
